Preparing for a BEGIN Career

The BEGIN (Business, Entrepreneurship, Government, Industry, and Nonprofit) Career Initiative is designed to support emerging and established mathematicians who are interested in the broad range of professions in which mathematical research experience is important with the aim of gaining connections and opportunities that lead to employment. Connect with BEGIN and discover an array of careers waiting for you!

A BEGIN representative will be available to speak with you at the AMS Programs booth  after this session! You can also visit the BEGIN Initiative website anytime.

Making Your Best Next Step: Finding Your Pathway to Success

The journey from undergraduate education to earning graduate degrees in mathematics is full of decisions, challenges, and opportunities. For students from underrepresented groups, the challenges are often compounded by systemic barriers and a lack of representation in graduate programs. In this session, we will explore the importance of assessing your current academic position, defining your goals for graduate education, and envisioning your professional destination. We will also describe AMS resources available to help you make your best next step.

Visit the AMS Programs booth after Alvina’s presentation to speak with her about making the next step in your mathematical journey! Also check out the Inclusive Graduate Education Network Mathematics Initiative (IGEN-Math).

An Introduction to MathSciNet

MathSciNet is an online, searchable database of the published mathematical material, curated by mathematicians for mathematicians. In addition to indexing the literature, we also solicit reviews of many papers from active research mathematicians. We’ll discuss what MathSciNet is, how it differs from other resources, and how to access and use the database. Along the way, we’ll learn about many of the useful tools that MathSciNet provides. Particular emphasis will be placed on features helpful to students at the beginning of their mathematical career.

To learn more about MathSciNet, check out the Quick Start Guide (PDF) and the playlist of short tutorial videos.
